Is a Small Sailing Ship Cruise for You?
Recently, we celebrated Christmas aboard the Star Flyer, one of the stunning vessels in the Star Clipper Fleet. From start to finish, we truly enjoyed every moment – a solid 10 out of 10 experience! With over 45% of the passengers being return travelers, it’s clear that small sailing ship cruising has a dedicated fan base. However, this type of travel is not for everyone. If you’ve been considering a small sailing ship cruise, here are some key factors to help you decide if it’s the right fit for you.
1. Seasickness Sensitivity
Let’s start with a major dealbreaker: if you get even the slightest bit seasick, small ship sailing is probably not for you. Unlike larger cruise liners, small sailing ships like the Star Flyer move through the water in a way that’s more akin to a traditional sailboat. You’ll feel the waves, and the experience can include unexpected movements. For those with sensitive stomachs, this may be a challenging environment. Many on board wore anti seasickness patches but for someone prone to seasickness I would avoid cruises like this..
2. Cabin Size and Comfort
Small sailing ships are beautiful and impeccably maintained, but the cabin sizes reflect their intimate nature. Unless you splurge for a pricier upgrade like the owner’s suite, you’ll be sharing a very compact space with your travel companion. It’s essential to be comfortable with the person you’re traveling with, as you’ll be in close quarters. If you prefer large, opulent accommodations, this might not be the best option for you.
3. European Vibes
I told my husband that this trip felt like Europe at sea. The overall vibe of the boat, the sophistication of the cuisine, and the temperament of the passengers all leaned toward European tastes. With travelers from 14 different countries on board, it was a cosmopolitan experience, and only a small percentage of passengers were American. If you enjoy cultural diversity and refined dining experiences, you’ll feel right at home. However, if you’re looking for a quintessentially American cruise experience, this might not hit the mark.
4. Nightlife Expectations
If you cruise for the casinos, DJs, or big, energetic nightlife scenes, small ship sailing won’t meet your expectations. While the Star Flyer offered delightful entertainment, such as a talented pianist who played during happy hour and after-hours parties with intimate dancing (think bachata), this experience is far removed from the flashier entertainment of large cruise ships. The atmosphere is laid-back and intimate, perfect for those who enjoy small, elegant gatherings.
5. Suitability for Families with Small Children
This type of cruising is not ideal for families with young children. The boat’s movement through the water, combined with its beautiful but traditional teak railings, could pose challenges for curious little ones. Safety and space concerns make it better suited for adults or families with older, more independent children.
Final Thoughts
Small sailing ship cruises, like those offered by the Star Clipper Fleet, provide a unique and enchanting way to explore the world. These experiences are perfect for travelers seeking adventure, sophistication, and a connection with the sea. However, they’re not for everyone. If any of the dealbreakers above resonate with you, it might be worth exploring other options.
For us, the Star Flyer was a dream come true, and we’d sail again in a heartbeat. But as always, travel is personal, and finding the right fit is key to creating memories you’ll treasure forever. Happy sailing! ⛵️
